Plaza de la Independencia or Plaza Grande, as it’s known locally, is a confluence of history, culture, and daily life. Ecuador declared its independence from Spain in 1809 and the statue at the center of the plaza commemorates this country forming decision.
But there’s lots more to see.
Most locals enjoy sitting on the many park benches, sipping coffee, chatting and people watching – a fine activity.
If you’re in tourist mode, there are a number of interesting sights:
- Changing of the guard – all the pomp and flash you need in military dress
- Palacio de Carondelet – the president’s house and seat of government
- 16th Century Metropolitan Cathedral
- Palacio Arzobispal – food courts & shopping
If you’re in old town Quito, there’s a good chance you’ll be find yourself in Plaza Grande more than once. It’s a great place to relax and soak in some history. Grab a coffee and a seat on the bench and watch the world go by.
